A Typical Day in Year 3

Arrival and Registration

Children arrive in class at 8:45am. They hand in their homework diaries and reading record books. During registration, children will be set a morning challenge to complete.

9:00 - 9:30am Extended Literacy

During this time, children work on reading, spelling and handwriting skills in supported groups.

9:35 - 10:30am English

Pupils work on a range of texts and writing skills set as tasks. Pupils are well supported in class by a strong team of teaching assistants.

10:30 - 10:45am BREAK TIME

Pupils are given a healthy snack and a refreshing drink each day. During this time, staff offer time to support pupils with homework and reading.

10:45 - 12:00pm Maths

Pupils will be supported in one of two groups. Children practise their mental calculation skills including multiplication tables, doubling, halving and number bonds. Children remain in their sets for the main session and are taught according to the New National Curriculum.

12:00 - 12:15pm Class Read

During this time, a book is selected which the class read together. The teacher will read aloud and will also invite the children to read aloud to their peers if they wish too.

Lunchtimes

Children having packed lunch remain in a year 3 classroom  to eat and school dinners eat in the main hall. All children hand their money to the class teacher each morning.

Afternoons

Afternoon sessions are generally spent completing foundation subjects such as science, music, German, PE and topic (geography, history, art and DT linked).

Homework

In year 3 children receive two shorter homework tasks  a week or a longer  time equivalent piece. Pupils are expected to read a minimum of 5 nights each week for 10 minutes and have their homework diary signed.

The children will also receive a Home-Learning Challenge (which is linked to a subject being covered at school) each holiday. For this, we encourage the children to be creative and for members of the family to join in with this process.

Responsibility

Year 3 pupils wanting extra responsibility can apply to become Eco Warriors, Council Representatives and members of the Learning Team.

Residential Trip 2017

The year 3 residential trip this year is to Alymerton Lodge in North Norfolk. Pupils depart on a Friday morning and return on the Sunday afternoon. The pupils take part in lots of exciting and adventurous activities, including night walks, completing a high wire course and taking a boat trip to see the seals at Blakeney.

Local Trips 2016/17

This year we are planning to visit the Time and Tide Museum, the local church and a local farm. In addition to these visits, we will also welcome a variety of visitors to our school during subject days such as RE, DT and even Egyptian Day!
