A Day In the Cottage

Arriving in the morning

The school gates open at 8:30am each morning and the children are welcomed into the Cottage at 8:45am. The main teaching staff in the Cottage are Mrs Cartner-Dobbs and Mrs Harvey. The children participate in table-top activities until 9.15am which helps the children to settle and prepares them ready for working alongside the other children in The Cottage.

9:30 – 10:30 – Literacy

We understand that writing and other literacy skills could be difficult for some of the children in the Cottage so we provide practical, hands-on activities which motivate the pupils during their lessons but also helps the staff to observe whether any additional help is needed.

10:30 – 11am - Break time

During break time all children have the opportunity sit, have a snack and a drink before joining the children on the main school playground.

11:00 – 12.15 – Maths

We try to approach Maths lessons in a fun practical way with the use of the interactive whiteboard and a variety of maths games. We belive that this helps the children to understand abstract concepts and makes learning maths more enjoyable.

12:15 – 12:30 – Reward Time
In the Cottage we use a simple reward system and during the day if the pupils get at least four out of five smiley's they are allowed to have 15 minutes for free play. This means they can choose their own activity, however if they do not earn at least four smiley's then the staff in The Cottage will choose something for them to do.

srblunch12:30 – 1:30 – Lunchtime

All the children eat their lunch in the Cottage - whether they bring their own packed lunch or have a meal from our school cafeteria. Once all of the pupils have finished their dinner they are allowed to go out onto the main school playground.

1:30 – 2pm – Assembly/Sound of the day

At 1:30pm the pupils in The Cottage come across to the school hall to join in with the assembly.

2:00 – 3:00 – Afternoon session

During the afternoon the children participate in lots of different activities and learn about new and exciting things. These may include: developing their social skills, science lessons, topic, life skills and target activities

3:00 – 3:15 – Reward Time

3:15 – Time to go home!

Reading Café

We think that it is really important for parents/carers to be involved in their children's school lives. Once a month on a Friday morning we will be inviting you into the Cottage. During the morning you'll be listening to a story then carrying out a practical activity connected to the book with your child. When we reach break time the children with have their snack and drink, any parents will be offered tea or coffee. We feel that this is a good opportunity to work with your child but also to gain support from staff in the cottage and other parents.

P.E kit

Please could you provide your child with a p.e. kit in a named bag to keep at school. They should have blue or black shorts, a white polo shirt or house team shirt (which can be purchased from the main office) and a pair of black plimsolls.

Please note: We ask that all children do not bring in anything from home - such as toys and games, as they can be distracting during lessons.
