A Day In Year 1

Arriving in the morning

The school gates will open at 8:30am each morning and your parents/carers will wait on the playground with you until the classroom door is opened at 8:45am. We ask that your parents/carers drop you off at the classroom door so that you (and the other children!) settle quickly and are ready to start the school day. If your parents/carers need to speak to the teacher then they just need to let us know at the door and this can be arranged. We also ask that we are informed if someone different will be picking you up in the afternoon.

8:45 – 9:00 – Register and early morning work.

Each morning the children come in and put their coats on pegs, packed lunches in the baskets provided and book bags away. They will then sit quietly and complete the early morning work on the desks whilst Miss Spencer and Miss Henry call the register to check if all of the children are in school. You will be asked if you are having a school dinner or a packed lunch.

9:00 – 10:00 – Maths

Maths is taught in class which is structured so all children are able to access and succeed. We start with counting forwards and back in 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s. We then often start with a game that engages the children in what they are going to investigate during the lesson. We are working on their understanding of the number system and place value. We strive to make the lessons interactive and enjoyable with well thought out equipment used to aid learning this can all be found in our maths areas or in our table trays.

There are lots of things that you can do at home to help you with your maths, such as:

• Practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s

• Knowing which number is bigger or smaller and what comes next, before etc.

• Sorting numbers into numerical order

• Talking about time using words such as morning, afternoon, today, tomorrow, next, last, after, front, back and start to tell the time to the nearest hour.

• Noticing maths in your local environment for example shopping with mum or dad!

10:00 – 10:30– Phonics

We spend some time each day helping you to learn your letter sounds and names. You will work in small groups with an adult and you may even take some work home to share with your families! It’s very important that you try your best to practice the letters and sounds and remember them as best as you can!

We will be listening to you read and share sentences and books. We will also be playing some interactive games that support you to recognise the phonic sounds in different words.

You will also get to do lots of writing at school! You will learn how to form your letters correctly and also how to write short sentences. It would be great if you could read at least three times a week with an adult and complete your phonics homework; this may be to practise your tricky words!

10:30 – 10:45 Snack

During the morning the school will provide you with a healthy snack and a drink. We encourage the children to be as independent as possible, even when peeling fruit and pouring drinks! Please let the teacher know if your child has any allergies.

11:00 – 12:00 – English

English is taught through cross-curricular lessons and you will be learning skills through exploring our exciting Year 1 topics. We focus on sentence structure and handwriting when we are writing, placing punctuation correctly and using our phonic knowledge to help us to spell.


The children will complete a Purple Book assessment once every half term, which will indicate their successes and how far they have progressed each term.

12:00 – 1:00 – Lunchtime

We will all have our lunch in the main school hall. We will walk over to the hall together and then we will sit at tables and eat our lunch with our friends. All of the reception children are entitled to a free school dinner. It is really important that you are able to eat your dinner with a knife and fork so make sure youpractice!

After we have eaten lunch, the children play on the playground. Although closely monitored, the children are given the opportunity to take part in unstructured play which encourages them to develop their own games and rules.

1:00 – 1:30 – Registration, story and singing

After lunch we have quiet time where we settle back into the routine of the day. We will sit and take the register, share a story and do some singing.

1:30 – 1:45 Handwriting practise

We take the opportunity to practise our handwriting using different media to make it fun and stimulating, we are currently practising our cursive letters so we can join up words in our sentences. This means we can write faster and more efficiently, please feel free to practise at home and show off to family members!

1:45 – 2:45 – Afternoon lesson

During the afternoon, we will either do music, games, science, art, history or geography. Pupils are mostly taught by the class teacher but are also taught by other members of staff who can share their own subject expertise with the children.

2:45 – 3:05 – Review of the day

At the end of each day it is really important to talk about the activities we have covered throughout the day and gives us time to reflect and share highlights of our day.


3:05 – 3:15 – Time to go home!

After a busy day, it’s time for you to go home! We will all sit on the carpet together and your parents/carers will wait outside the classroom door to pick you up. Once one of the adults sees your parent/carer you will be called to go home. Unfortunately, we can’t let you go home with a different adult unless we have been told that you are being picked up by someone different.
